Nook Volleyball Academy
A travel club program for junior players who want to take their game to the next level. The Academy gives players the opportunity to train and compete with athletes of their own level in an intense and professional environment.

USA Volleyball Open

Age Groups: U12 – U18
Season length: November – February
Training: 2 days per week

  • Participate in open level regional events and multi-day competitions

NOOK VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY COACHING STAFF

MASTER COACHES

U18 – Randall Kreider
Coach Kreider is the current Head Volleyball Coach of NCAA Division lll Elizabethtown College (in his 11th season) and has been responsible for building the program into a perennial contender at the conference and regional levels. Coach Kreider has been named the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year three times.

Coach Kreider has developed and coached 25 All-Conference players, two conference Players of the Year, a conference Rookie of the Year, three all-region players and three All-Americans. Kreider has also served as Head Coach of the Ephrata Volleyball Club’s 15’s and 16’s teams. His 15’s team won the KRVA Regionals and earned a bid to USA Volleyball Nationals in 2001.

A 1994 graduate of Gettysburg College Kreider served as co-captain, president and vice president of the Gettysburg Intercollegiate Men’s Club Team. He has also played at the A level in the USA Volleyball Association and the KRVA.

While at Cocalico High School, Kreider was a member of the state Final Four, District lll runner-up, and Lancaster/Lebanon League Champion 1990 boys volleyball team.

U17 – Shannon Sahm (16′s Black Head Coach)
Coach Sahm has been a fixture in the Lancaster/Lebanon areas for years. Sahm is going into his 12th year of coaching club volleyball, and has also been active as a PIAA Official, a member of the volleyball rules team and a club board member. Sahm also has experience coaching in the high school ranks for Cocalico. In addition to skills development Sahm stresses a love and passion for the sport of volleyball in all his players. Sahm spent seven years playing in USA Volleyball men’s events. CAP 1 Certified

U16 – Nate Ocasio
Coach Ocasio is the current Head Coach for the Central York Girls Varsity team. Ocasio has also coached camps at Penn State, Villanova, Virginia Beach, Shippensburg and Lock Haven Universities. He was an Assistant Coach at Infinity Volleyball Academy and Kenyon College. Additionally, Ocasio has been the Club Director and Head Coach of White Rose Volleyball Club and an Assistant Boys Coach for Northeastern High School.

Ocasio was an opposite hitter for the Men’s Volleyball Team at Juniata College from 2004-2007. He was a two-time NCAA Division lll All-American, a National Champion Final 4 MVP and a Division l All-EIVA player in 2005 and 2006. Ocasio went on to play professional volleyball in Puerto Rico, and trained and played in AVP professional beach events.

U15 – Steve Goris (16′s Elite Head Coach)
Coach Goris is the current Assistant Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division ll Millersville University. In addition to Collegiate coaching, Goris coached for the Great Lakes Quicksilver Club from 2002-2009. After relocating to Lancaster, Goris has coached for the LAVA VBC on both the boys and girls side, and has also been Co-Director of the club. Additionally, he is the current Head Girls Coach at Lancaster Mennonite High School.

Coach Goris attended the University of Toledo where he was a libero/defensive specialist for the Rockets men’s volleyball team. Goris was a two-time recipient of the Coaches Award for leadership and work ethic. Goris played in USAV Men’s Volleyball from 2000-2009.

Over the years, Coach Goris has coached many players that have moved on to play at the collegiate level.

U14 – Eli Porr (17′s Elite Head Coach)
Coach Porr is currently an Assistant Coach at NCAA Division ll Millersville University. Before joining the staff at Millersville, he was an Assistant Coach at Eastern Illinois University. Coach Porr has seven years of coaching experience, ranging from assistant coach at Messiah College to running his own volleyball camps in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; serving as a hitting Coach at Millersville University Camps and Lead Camp Director at BYOV in York for the past two summers. Porr has also worked Bob Bertucci camps at Temple University and High Performance Camps in Florida.

As a player, Porr was deemed the No. 1 recruit in the state coming out of High School, and was selected as an All-State player in 2004 and 2005. Porr played club volleyball for Red Rose VBC from 2001-2005 and, college volleyball for East Stroudsburg University from 2006-2009. Coach Porr was the 2009 Bob Sweeney Award Winner. CAP 1 Certified

U13 – Dewey Barlow (15′s Black Head Coach)
Coach Barlow has been a Coach and Board Member for Norlanco Volleyball Club since 2005. His Head Coaching positions have been focused on the younger club players (12′s-14′s) where he’s been instrumental in the mechanical development of the players. Barlow is also the current Assistant Varsity Girls Coach at Conestoga High School, and has been coaching and leading the Conestoga Middle School program since 2008.

U12 – Brian P. Smith (13′s Black Head Coach)
Brian joins our Coaching Staff after 10 years with Valley Forge Volleyball Club where for the past nine years he has overseen their 13′s program, twice qualifying for USA Junior Nationals. He is the current Head JV Girls Coach/Assistant Varsity Coach at Bishop Shanahan High School, and has an additional three years coaching in the Coatesville Catholic CYO.

COACHES

Lauren Bewley- 18′s Black Assistant Coach
The 2013 season will be Lauren Bewley’s seventh year as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Lancaster Bible College. Bewley, a four-year starter at Cedarville University, guided the Chargers to their first NCCAA East Region Championship in 21 years in 2010.

As a player, Bewley was named an NCCAA First-Team All-American in 2003, and a Second-Team All-American in 2004 and 2005. She was the American Midwest Conference Freshman of the Year in 2002. During her time at Cedarville, she led the Lady Jackets to a 148-47 record.

As head coach, Bewley not only likes to see her players succeed on the court, but in the classroom and in life as well.

Amanda Boger – 17′s Black Assistant Coach
Amanda gained coaching experience at Central Bucks East and for GPS Crush. As a player she played for four years as a DS/S for Millersville University where she graduated with her BS in Speech Communications. Amanda went on to get her Master’s Degree at East Stroudsburg University. As a club player, Amanda is an alumni of Advanced Approach in Pittsburgh as well as Mizuno Elite in Ohio. Amanda is also a certified USAV Referee.

Stephan Boyer – 17′s Black Head Coach
Stephan has a wide range of experience coaching at different levels of the sport. He gained collegiate experience as an Assistant at Lebanon Valley College women’s program, high school Head Coaching experience with the Lebanon Catholic JV/Middle School program, and club experience with Totally Xtreme (2009-2010) as well as Norlanco Volleyball Club (2011-2012).

Stephan is a member of the AVCA, and has gained playing experience as a USAV Men’s player, a club player at Lebanon Valley College and a four-year player at Cedar Crest High School.

Stephanie Derk- 15′s Black Assistant Coach
Coaching Experience: 1st year with Nook Volleyball. Prior to coming to Nook, 1 year coaching with Hempfield Middle School. Played high school career at Lower Dauphin receiving 1st and 2nd team all district honors and serving as team captain for 3 consecutive years. Attended college at Lebanon Valley. Helped win 3 consecutive Commonwealth Conference Championships and advance in NCAA Division III play.

Beth Findley- 15′s Black Head Coach
Beth bring two years of experience coaching for Norlanco Volleyball Club as well as a season coaching for Prevail VBC and added experience coaching and training players for the Hempfield Recreation League. Beth is a current player for Penn State Harrisburg and a former two year varsity starter for Solanco High School where she holds the school record for assists. As a club player, Beth played for both LAVA VBC and LA South, and for three seasons competed in USA Junior Beach Volleyball events.

Jessica Franz – 14′s Elite Head Coach
Jess was the Head Coach for LAVA Volleyball Club’s Elite 15’s team in 2011. Jess also coached for LAVA in 2010, and has been very instrumental in development of the Youth Program at Millersville University. Jess is currently in her third year as a starting setter for Millersville University, and has been named a PSAC Scholar–Athlete all three years.

Named to the all-county, all-district and all-state teams in 2008 and 2009. Jess was also tabbed as York/Adams County Player of the Year two years straight in2008 and 2009, she also received the Shipley Award In 2007, Jess led the team to a 2007 District III Championship, and helped the squad reach third place at states . As a member of the 2008 District III Championship and state runner-up team. She helped the team to a 2009 county championship. Off the court, Jess participated in class council, Link Crew, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was a member of National Honor Society.

Heather Keller – 16′s White Assistant Coach
Heather was an assistant coach for the Solanco Junior High Girls Volleyball program, and spent time conditioning the Solanco High School Girls Volleyball team this past 2012 season.

Keller attended Lycoming College where she played volleyball all four years and landed the role of Co-Captain her senior year. In the 2011 season, the team excelled to the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the first time, and also earned the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award for the first time in school history.

Prior to Lycoming College, Keller was a two-year varsity starter at Solanco High School and was named to the Lancaster-Lebanon Second Team in her final year. She was also selected as the Most Valuable Player and led her team in kills, digs and points. Keller also played club for LAVA and former club team, LA South.

Judy Keller – 12′s Head Coach
Judy has been very active in USAV Volleyball for the past 11 years. She was the Club Director of Legacy Volleyball Club (2010-2011) as well as the 14′s Head Coach. Prior to that, Judy was a Head Coach with Norlanco Volleyball Club from 2007-2010 and an active member of the Board from 2008-2010. Judy also retains her position coaching the Solanco Junior High Volleyball teams (2003-present), and has additional experience coaching for Orange Crush VBC and LA South VBC.

Marissa Lewis- 13′s Green Assistant Coach
Marissa will be coaching for the first time in 2013 with Spooky Nook Volleyball. Marissa attended Millersville University from 2006-2010, where she played volleyball under Coach Gary Lee and Betsy Hayden. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education. Marissa is currently teaching 3rd grade in the city of Lancaster.

Jeff Martin- 16′s Green Assistant Coach
Jeff is Cap certified coach and is passionate about the game of volleyball! He enjoys bringing enthusiasm to the court in order to motivate and develop players to love the game of volleyball. Jeff is excited to have his first coaching experience as an assistant coach with Spooky Nook Volleyball Club. He has played volleyball for over 25 years. Outdoor beach and grass double’s tournaments are always a part of my summer. As well as having played various men’s and coed organized leagues with the Lancaster and Ephrata Recreation Center.

Mary Paul – 14′s Elite Assistant Coach
Mary is a current Millersville University volleyball player who has experience as an Assistant Coach for the LAVA Volleyball Club’s 15′s Elite Team, and has been involved in player development at Millersville Youth Development Program (2010-2012). Mary has additional experience coaching summer camps (2007-2010).

A two-sport athlete at St. Basil Academy, Mary was named to Second Team All-Academy as an outside hitter her junior year and tabbed first team honors her senior year. She also led the team to a fourth place finish in districts, marking its first state playoff appearance in school history. Mary also helped the basketball team to a first place finish in the conference and district championships.

Carly Plank – 14′s Black Head Coach
Carly is currently the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. Carly has additional coaching experience as the 13′s Coach for Norlanco Volleyball Club. Carly started all four years as an outside hitter for Cairn University, totaling a career 1,217 kills. She was selected to the All-Regional team her junior and senior years and was also selected as Student-Athlete of the week. Carly played her high school volleyball for Conestoga High School.

Mary Poole- 13′s Green Head Coach
Mary brings a vast amount of high level collegiate experience to her first year coaching. Mary graduated December 2011 from Eastern University, where she was a four year starting middle for their volleyball program. They went from being unranked team her freshman year to being top five in the nation her senior year. They went to the sweet sixteen her freshman and sophomore year and then made it the Final Four her senior year. Mary graduated from Lancaster Mennonite in 2008 where she played volleyball and basketball all four years.

Jason Ruhl – 18′s Elite Head Coach
Jason coached the LAVA Volleyball Club’s Elite 16′s team in 2011,and for the past three years has been a member of the Lancaster Mennonite High School Girls Coaching Staff. Jason is a Level 3 Double Impact, Positive Coaching Certified Coach. Jason’s collegiate playing experience was as an outside hitter and defensive specialist while attending both Lancaster Bible College and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology where he received the Coaches Award.

Courtney Sahm – 16′s Black Assistant Coach
Courtney is currently coaching for the Manheim Township Middle School Volleyball Program. As a player, she played for Immaculata University, Norlanco Volleyball Club and Cocalico High School.

Dennis Saylor – 17′s Green Head Coach
Dennis has a wealth of club Head Coaching experience with Norlanco Volleyball Club (2005-2012) as well as coaching at Ephrata High School (2010) and Lititz Area Mennonite School Junior High (2000-2009). As a player, Dennis has played USAV in Open, AA, A and B, and has advanced with his team to Open Nationals. CAP l certified.

Amanda Shouck- 16′s Elite Assistant Coach
Amanda joins Spooky Nook Volleyball Club after 10 years of excellence coaching in York County. Amanda currently coaches at York Suburban and has previously coached West York High School. In club, Amanda’s teams have qualified for USA Nationals, and have been some of the top youth teams in the KRVA Region.

In addition to coaching girls club volleyball for nine years, Amanda has strived to advance her coaching knowledge through professional development. She recently traveled to California to study the best practices being used for the development of youth players in the West.

In addition to coaching at high school and club levels, Amanda also has experience teaching the sport to young players at camps and clinics. Her passion and dedication to the sport and the young ladies is clear to see. Amanda’s coaching philosophy breeds great success with the teams and programs she has been involved with.

Brian D. Smith – 15′s Elite Head Coach
Coach Smith is the current Head Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division ll Millersville University. In addition to overseeing the Millersville program, Coach Smith has coached for LAVA VBC for the past seven years, and has been a Club Director for the past six years. Smith has additional collegiate coaching experience in volleyball, swimming, and strength and conditioning. Since 2006, Smith has also been a fixture on the sidelines of both the girls and boys programs at Lancaster Mennonite High School. After leading his boys team to a District lll second place finish and a trip to the State Elite Eight in 2011, his team followed that up with a perfect mark in section play in 2011.

Coach Smith is also very active in the region, and is currently in his third year on the KRVA Board as the acting Coach Development Chairperson. Coach Smith gained playing experience in high school and during his 10 years in the United States Marine Corps where he had the opportunity to complete at a high level playing for the All-Marine Team. He also played at the USAV AA, A and BB levels for 15 years. Smith is a 1987 graduate from Millersville University. CAP 1 Certified.

Taylor Smith – 13′s Black Assistant Coach
Taylor is a first year assistant coach for the 13′s Black team. She played at Lancaster Mennonite High School all 4 years, playing on the varsity team for 3. Taylor currently plays for Millersville University where she has completed her first season as a marauder. She is a defensive specialist as well as an outside hitter for the team, and had earned the opportunity to start her first season wearing the marauder jersey.

Dale Witmer – 16′s Green Head Coach
Dale is in his fourth season as a USA Volleyball Club Coach. A former NCAA Division l setter for George Mason University (1984-1986), Dale holds the all-time record for most assists in a single match (118 vs. USC) and helped lead his team to a third place finish in 1984 and 1985 NCAA National Division l Championships. A PIAA All-State player (1983) from Conestoga High School, Dale won many additional honors as a high school and juniors player.
